Queen streetcar is about to be rerouted for more than four years. Here’s where it will run

Starting May 1, the Queen 501 streetcar will divert north and run along Dundas Street between McCaul Street and Broadview Avenue, to make way for the construction of Metrolinx’s Ontario Line, the TTC said.

A big, long-term diversion on one of Toronto’s busiest streetcar routes is set to begin next month.

The diversion is expected to last a total of four and a half years. During that time, Queen Street from Bay Street to Yonge Street and from Yonge Street to Victoria Street will be closed to all vehicle traffic in order to build the Ontario Line station at Queen and Yonge. The Dundas detour was not the initial plan. The 501 streetcar was supposed to run between York Street and Church Street on Adelaide and Richmond — a shorter detour — but construction delays in the restoration of Adelaide streetcar tracks meant the street would not be ready in time.
