Moscow was not left without a voice, with Russia’s current ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin, putting the Kremlin’s point of view. But there was a near full house of former Western leaders, including David Cameron and François Hollande of France, along with the ex-head of the EU Commission, José Manuel Barroso, various European diplomats and staffers from the Barack Obama administration.
The episode began in seemingly undramatic fashion at a 2013 summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, during which the announcement of a trade deal between Ukraine and the European Union had been expected. The then Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovych, had, however, been summoned to Moscow.A duly intimidated Yanukovych signed a deal with Russia instead.
