Footage showed large flames and thick smoke from the blaze as it consumed the Federal Security Service facility. Rostov governor Vasily Golubev claimed the fire was sparked by an electrical short circuit which ignited lubricants and fuel. However, reports said follow-up explosions continued from possible ammunition stored inside the secret services building.
According to Russian state news agency Tass, one person is dead and two more were injured with the toll of casualties expected to increase.
