Psychedelics can produce positive changes in attitudes about deathanddying — and may be a way to help ease anxiety and depression toward the endoflife, new research suggests.

Both psychedelic drug experiences and near-death experiences can alter perspectives on death and dying, but there have been few direct comparisons of these phenomena, the investigators note.

The psychedelic group had more men than women and tended to be younger at the time of the experience than was the nondrug group. Three quarters of the psychedelic group and 85% of the nondrug group rated their experiences as among the top five most personally meaningful and spiritually significant events of their life.

Both the psychedelic and nondrug participants showed robust increases on standardized measures of mystical and near-death experiences, but these measures were significantly greater in the psychedelic group.
