I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
The numbers are in, and PS5’s Stellar Blade was the best-selling game in April 2024. It was a down month overall compared to past years, but Stellar Blade was ahead of Helldivers 2, Modern Warfare 3, and the resurgent Sea of Thieves and Fallout 4, high off a PlayStation release and an Amazon show, respectively.covers physical sales and digital data where available, and only has ranks, not actual numbers.
Why is Stellar Blade’s performance so unusually impressive? It’s mainly about what does or does not work in this day and age of gaming . In Stellar Blade’s case:It is not from a studio with experience making AAA gamesIt has no microtransactions, no seasonal pass, only earned cosmetics Simply put, this is everything that almost all big studios are pushing back against in the modern age of gaming, only playing it safe with long-established IPs, holding back in-game elements to sell as microtransactions or making “live” games meant to last forever. Here, SHIFT UP, being such a young company with this being its first AAA release, did not have any of that baggage or expectations, so they were able to make a much more “traditional” release that is so exceedingly rare these days.
The success of Stellar Blade has SHIFT UP talking about a sequel and they have said they will add more content to the current game like photo mode, more outfits and probably more combat challenges that will join the “boss rush” they just added last week. I’ve heard the game described as an “amazing 8 out of 10” which I can relate to, as I did indeed give it an 8 out of 10, and it is…also my favorite new game I’ve played this year. It appears I’m not alone.
We’ll see how sales progress over the longer term. 2024 will not have quite as many huge-scale releases as 2023, so it has the potential to have a longer tail as more and more players pick it up. This is also a solid win for Sony, given that this is a PS5 exclusive, and it’s a big hit outside of their usual franchises. In this age of acquisitions, I do have to wonder about the future of SHIFT UP now…Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
