Justice Minister John Hogan. -Juanita Mercer/SaltWire NetworkST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The provincial government offered more details on Tuesday, March 14, about the cyberattack on the health-care system in October 2021.

Since June 2021, Hive targeted more than 1,500 victims around the world, including hospitals and other critical infrastructure, and received more than $100 million in ransom payments. The report released by the province on Tuesday provides a timeline of events for the cyberattack on the province's health-care system.

Outside the House of Assembly on Tuesday, Justice Minister John Hogan told reporters the two-week timeframe between when the attacker accessed the system and when it was noticed is not unusual when dealing with a sophisticated attacker, according to experts the government worked with throughout the investigation. The report says there continues to be no evidence that the information taken during the attack was “misused.

A public announcement about the outage was made on Nov. 1, and the public was told about the attack on Nov. 3. On Nov. 9, the regional health authorities were notified of the potential scope of the privacy breach, and the public was informed that a privacy breach occurred. “Part of the efforts, of course, to mitigate that in the future is to be able to check systems to see if there's attackers in there, but unfortunately, cyber attackers might always be one step ahead of government entities, and other entities as well,” Hogan told reporters.
