Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Christine Tell told media there was no specific incident that led to the decision to call the review. “It’s more a collaboration or a bigger picture thing than that. And they’ve been struggling, as we have witnessed over the last year or so, and there’s been concerns, complaints coming in and they’re not feeling as safe as they should. And every citizen should feel safe in their communities,” Tell said.Article contentShe said Knecht’s review will start on Monday.
The force’s operations came under scrutiny after the death of a 13-month-old boy, Tanner Brass, in February, and three in-custody deaths late last year, which are all subject to investigations by the Public Complaints Commission.Police previously said officers responded to a call about a family dispute on the morning of Feb. 10, and that one person was taken to police cells at the time. Then, just before 11 a.m.
Leaders of the FSIN, Prince Albert Grand Council and Thunderchild First Nation called for the immediate firings of two police officers, a sergeant, and Bergen, as well as a coroner’s inquest.
