Those were the words of Providence Christian’s Kamdyn Kelley about her golf game Monday.Sparked by an eagle and six birdies, Kelley fired a 6-under 66 to earn medalist honors in the Class 1A-3A South 1 sub-state girls tournament at Dothan’s Robert Trent Jones Highland Oaks Golf Course.
People are also reading… She earned medalist honors by seven strokes over Mobile Christian’s Julie Waldo , the other state individual qualifier from the sub-state. “You have to give credit to Mobile Christian. We knew Tuscaloosa Academy was good. We played Mobile Christian last week and we beat them by 12 strokes. They came back and beat us by eight. That’s called golf. We played well, though. I was proud of the way we competed.”Providence’s Kelley said all facets of the game were working in sync during the day, except on two holes.
The highlight for Kelley came on the third hole of the back nine, the Marshwood No. 3 hole, where she earned an eagle on a par 4.She earned a par on the No. 4 hole before running into trouble at No. 5 and No. 6 for her two bogeys. Finishing with a 5 and a 6 , it was the only two holes that she didn’t record a 4 or lower on a day.She quickly recovered with a birdie on No. 7 and finished her final two holes with a par.
“I am going to keep doing what I have been doing because it really works,” Kelley said. “I am excited to go to state for the experience. I am just going to keep practicing and see what happens.” Miley Martin recorded a team best 80, while Skye Mathews had an 83 and both Mary Lawrence Lee and Gisselle Mathews had an 86. Cate Woodall, competing as an individual, carded a 96.
