Changing the name of “Black Boy Lane” in Tottenham is a small yet important expression of social progress, writes Joe Ejiofor.
But a clear majority of Haringey residents always wanted the name changed, and once a new name had been agreed, John La Rose’s descendants were very supportive. Should that “proud history” really be perpetuated in the multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi faith Britain of the 21Sure, street names can often be an honoured part of a community’s identity. They may arouse precious memories for those that have lived there, however racist, or oppressive street names arouse the opposite feelings for many residents.
Last month, in Mitte, Berlin, they renamed Nachtigalplatz as Manga Bell Platz, exchanging the name of the German empire’s commissioner for West Africa for that of Rudolf Duala Manga Bell, who fought against German colonialism and was executed for his troubles. They also renamed a street after a Namibian resistance fighter Cornelius Fredericks, from that of colonist Adolf Lüderitz.
