BOGOTA - Daniels Herrera kept quiet on his long walk home from work following violent protests in the Colombian capital Bogota last week, fearful his Venezuelan accent would give him away.
Herrera never expected to feel more unsafe here than in Venezuela, which has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world, but that changed when violence erupted in Bogota during a nationwide strike and authorities imposed a citywide curfew. “It was really frightening. We decided not to speak,” said the young cook, who works at a fast food restaurant in a Bogota shopping mall.
“There has been an increase in xenophobia in recent days,” said Ronald Rodriguez, director of the Observatory on Venezuela at Rosario University in Bogota. In June, Peru flew home hundreds of Venezuelans with criminal records amid allegations that migrants were responsible for a rise in crime. Peru’s interior minister warned against xenophobia in September after false rumors spread on social media alleging Venezuelans were trying to kidnap children.
