Protect our kids online | Opinion
This is not a partisan issue: Red, purple or blue, parents are worried about what their children are being exposed to on screens.Last month, I spoke on a conservative panel discussing family economic policy issues in the U.S. Senate. The panel after mine focused on children and technology. In her opening remarks, Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.
That’s when it happened: I got the prickly feeling that maybe the jig is up, the jig being kids’ access to highly addictive technologies. Red, purple or blue, parents are worried about what their children are being exposed to online. Politicians, to their credit, are listening., clamping down on kids’ access to social media has more bipartisan support among parents than child care support, paid parental leave, or any other issue typically thought of as “family policy.
Besides, who could know for sure? These technologies have been so new that we haven’t had a lot of data on their impact, and the data that did exist was proprietary to the companies. But parental indifference or mild discomfort is increasingly becoming a harder position to hold.
