AI researchers and tech leaders among 1,300 to sign open letter urging six-month pause on development of some systems to give time for industry, policy makers to create protocols
Prominent artificial intelligence researchers and tech leaders, including Canadian deep-learning pioneer Yoshua Bengio and Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, are calling for a temporary pause on the rapid development of some AI systems, arguing the technology poses “profound risks to society and humanity.”proposing that AI labs immediately halt the training of systems that are more powerful than GPT-4, the latest iteration of a large language model created by OpenAI.
Generative AI, a term for technology that creates text and images based on a few words supplied by a user, has skyrocketed in popularity since OpenAI released a chatbot called ChatGPT in November. Venture capital firms have rushed to pump money into AI startups, while established tech giants – such as Microsoft, and Google parent company Alphabet – have scrambled to integrate generative AI features into their products.
The letter cites other risks, including the potential for jobs across industries to be automated. And it notes that AI models are opaque and unpredictable. “Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us?” the letter says. “Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders.”
Max Tegmark, an MIT physics professor and president of the Future of Life Institute, said at the news conference that while AI researchers and companies are rightly concerned about societal risk, they face immense pressure to release products quickly, to prevent themselves from falling behind the competition. “Our goal is to help … avoid this very destructive competition driven by commercial pressure, where it’s so hard for companies to resist doing reckless things,” he said.
