Let wildflowers go to seed now to ensure blooms next year, plus consider summer plants that help monarch butterflies.
This year, bluebonnets probably did better than they have for years because of the timing of rains. Right now, I bet the wildflower patch is transitioning from its dominance by coreopsis and blue curl into fire wheel and bee balm. The key for bloom success next year is to let the wildflowers to go to seed. Letting the wildflowers go to seed will often test your patience, because that process is not the showiest part of the wildflower cycle.
Try these tactics. You can add to the length of the bloom period of wildflowers by seeding cosmos and salvia coccinea right now. The cosmos produce showy bloom in full sun without much attention until the end of summer. Salvia coccinea has bright red blooms that will return every summer in sun and shade. If you want to graduate into a new world of wildflowers, consider seeding annual sunflowers.
