LGBTQ2S+ people in Moose Jaw have been celebrating Pride since 1993. But in the fall of 2022, the local Pride organization — Moose Jaw Pride —Last September, board members voted unanimously to close down the organization, after they learned of significant financial liabilities.
At the time, Moose Jaw Pride board chair Cole Ramsey said LGBTQ2S+ people in the city would return to grassroots organizing, which is “nothing new to the queer and trans community,” they said. With more than a dozen events spanning 10 days — from the art show and parade to potlucks, performances and workshops — Pride in Moose Jaw is very much alive.
She was especially keen on making sure the Performers Cafe — an annual Pride open mic night that had been on hiatus since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic — could go ahead. Ramsey said this year’s Pride events in Moose Jaw have more than lived up to what they had hoped for.
