More than 17,000 customers of the Matanuska Electric Association remained without power in Mat-Su Monday morning

members were still without power. Roughly 19,000 members had been without power Sunday night. The outages were concentrated near Wasilla and Palmer but stretched along the Parks Highway toward Talkeetna.

Only a few people had stopped at the warming shelters by 7:30 a.m., said Taylar Sausen, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross. Many roads were impassable Monday morning and blowing snow and large drifts made drivingThe shelters are a place for people to warm up, charge their phones and get a warm drink or snack, Sausen said. They were not planning to remain open for overnight shelter as of Monday morning, she said.

“Our crews will continue working to get everyone back up - I know it’s tough not having an estimated time for restoration but it’s just very difficult to predict in these conditions,” the post said.
