Models show that a developing system headed toward the Gulf of Mexico will impact the Alabama, Georgia, and Florida later this week.
DOTHAN, Ala. -
Forecasters issued an advisory Monday for a tropical system which is expected to develop into a hurricane on Wednesday “and continue strengthening as it moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico” into potentially a major hurricane by Thursday. It’s currently 130 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman, heading to the north at 9 mph, with maximum sustained winds near 30 mph.
The center of the forecast track would take the system—to be named Helene---toward the Big Bend or eastern Panhandle of Florida, areas still reeling from Hurricane Michael in 2018.The National Hurricane Center urges people along the Gulf Coast to be prepared for the storm’s potential impacts, which include strong winds, heavy rain and storm surge.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
