The postal service is suggesting that homeowners in suburban or rural areas consider replacing the normal mailbox with a larger, more package friendly box.
The safety of the U.S. Postal Service is something that many of us used to take for granted. But with growing reports of mail and package theft, the postal service is urging you to take action. The News 8 On Your Side team has brought you many stories about mail theft over the years. This includes outgoing mail stolen from your front porch or the mailbox in your front yard. So, during this Mailbox Improvement Week, you could take the opportunity to upgrade to a larger, more secure mailbox.
As more consumers are ordering online, the larger box can accommodate packages and keep them out of the view of porch pirates. These boxes are usually about 12 inches in height and width and more than a foot deep.Mailboxes in rural or suburban areas make easier targets for mail thieves since they can drive right up to the box and open the door. For that reason, you may also want to consider a locking mailbox.
