The warrants are related to such offences as breaking-and-entering, assault, theft and failing to appear in court.

An Easter weekend blitz by Port Alberni RCMP to pick up people with warrants led to 12 being taken into custody.

Most of the alleged offenders have to remain in custody until they appear before a justice to find out if they are eligible for bail. Some have already been released with court dates. “Front-line officers know the importance of ensuring and maintaining the community’s confidence in the administration of justice, as well as ensuring that people accused of crimes attend for their court dates as required,” said Const. Richard Johns.

“Throughout the weekend, officers worked to ensure the B.C. Prosecution Service had all necessary information to conduct bail hearings, and to ensure those that were released for a future court date are being monitored with appropriate release conditions.”
