MindGeek argues that Pornhub is \u0027not an expression of Canadian cultural identity that Canadians expect the federal government to protect.\u0027
MindGeek was founded in Montreal, and the company was bought out by Ottawa-based private equity firm Ethical Capital Partners earlier this year. Pornhub is one of the most visited websites in the world, MindGeek noted in its comments.
It argued the CRTC shouldn’t expend “valuable resources on defining and regulating ‘uniquely Canadian’ explicit adult content.”Liberals to direct CRTC to keep hands off social media with streaming regulation Some of the world’s biggest tech companies, including Meta, Google, Amazon and Microsoft, submitted comments to the consultation. Bill C-11 drew two years of controversy over concerns it would give the CRTC regulatory authority over user-generated content, such as YouTube or TikTok videos posted by Canadians, but the Liberal government has now directed the CRTC to exclude user posts from regulation.
The CRTC has launched a series of consultations to help it figure out how to implement the bill, including one asking which online services should be required to register with the CRTC. In its submission to that consultation, Spotify asked the CRTC to exempt podcasts from regulation. The company pointed out the Liberal government has already directed the CRTC to exclude content from podcasters who “primarily use platforms that allow podcasters to upload their content without exercising control over the selection of programs for transmission.
