Poppy season is upon us – and with it the increasingly judgemental poppy police ✒️ kubared for ipaperviews
found out days ago, not wearing one at all. The latter an offence so egregious that within minutes of sticklers furiously pointing out the “gaffe” online, a poppyEven Rishi Sunak, amid competing political and economic storms in Government, has been so desperate to get the poppy optics right that he has been spotted hawking them himself in Westminster tube station.
There’s a nervousness behind this yearly embrace of all things poppy that reeks of the same overzealous groupthink that suggested anyone who didn’t. Or that cheering on pensioner veterans for raising money for the NHS is a cause for celebration, rather than another worrying sign that the Government isn’t doing its job. From clapping for the NHS to policing poppies, Britain loves a good old empty symbol.
