A day after urging an end to nuclear weapons, the pope avoided joining in Japanese bishops’ call for the elimination of nuclear power
TOKYO—Pope Francis warned about the potential damage to society from technology such as nuclear power after meeting victims of Japan’s 2011 nuclear disaster.
A day earlier, the pope had called for the abolition of nuclear weapons on visits to Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the only cities to be hit by nuclear attack. Catholic bishops in Japan have also called for the elimination of nuclear power, but the pope avoided taking that same position.
