Sec. Pompeo on Wednesday defended his request to have the State Dept. IG fired, saying it wasn't in retaliation for investigations the watchdog was conducting.

Menendez hit back at the secretary on Wednesday, calling his comments “shameful” and saying the actions by Pompeo that the inspector general had been looking into are “possibly illegal.”

Pompeo’s comments come as the Trump administration has taken action to replace watchdogs at several departments in recent weeks, including the acting inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services, the acting inspector general for the Department of Transportation, and aHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
