One part of the debt ceiling fight cuts the GOP’s way: Much of the public doesn’t understand the basics, so Republicans find it easier get away with dangerous radicalism. (via MaddowBlog)

. That didn’t make a lot of sense — only one side of the political divide is threatening to harm Americans deliberately — but the data served as a timely reminder that much of the country isn’t following the fight closely.yesterday on the results of its latest national survey.

In other words, thanks to such strong opposition to the idea from Republican voters in this poll, a narrow plurality of Americans now believes the United States should default on its debts. Or put another way, if everyone knew what the policy was all about, and how much suffering default would produce, we’d see different data.
