Poll: Fewer than 3-in-10 Dems have a 'strong opinion' about the 2020 nominee
Democratic voters are already tuning in to the 2020 presidential election, even if most say their mind isn’t made up about who they want to take on President Donald Trump next year.
The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll was conducted February 22-24, in the wake of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign rollout, which made a splash with Democratic voters. Fully 42 percent say they saw, read or heard “a lot” about Sanders’ announcement, and another 38 percent say they heard “some” about it. Only 21 percent say they didn’t hear much or anything at all about Sanders announcing his campaign.
Another third, 33 percent, say they “have a favorable opinion of him, but [they] would prefer if the Democrats nominated someone else.” Only 6 percent say they would be “unlikely to support him under any circumstances,” while another 15 percent say they would be “disappointed” if Sanders wins the nomination but would back him over a second term for Trump.
Biden hasn’t yet announced whether he will run for president; he said Tuesday he was “getting very close to a decision.”
