Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has not said he wants women investigated or punished for pregnancies that end in miscarriage. A six-week abortion law he signed said miscarriages are legal.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was “faking being arrested” during an abortion-rights protest outside the Supreme Court. The Abrams campaign did not cite any instances of Kemp saying he wanted women to be investigated for miscarriages.

However, spokespersons for Kemp’s campaign and the governor’s office maintained that under Georgia’s law, a woman cannot be prosecuted for getting an abortion or for having a miscarriage. In a search of the Nexis news database, we did not find that Kemp made any statements regarding the law, miscarriages and investigations or punishment of women.

But Kreis said the law’s"heartbeat" provision could expose a woman to a police investigation. He said someone in a dispute with a woman could report her ended pregnancy as an illegal abortion to police, who might feel compelled to investigate. Such a case theoretically could result in a district attorney charging that woman with murder, given that the law essentially defines life as beginning when a heartbeat is detected, he said.

Judge reinstates North Carolina’s 20-week abortion banJudge reinstates North Carolina’s 20-week abortion banAbortions in North Carolina are no longer legal after 20 weeks of pregnancy, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, eroding protections in one of the South’s few remaining safe havens for reproductive freedom. U.S. District Judge William Osteen reinstated an unenforced 20-week abortion ban, with exceptions for urgent medical emergencies, after he said the June U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade erased the legal foundation for his 2019 ruling that placed an injunction on the 1973 state law. “Neither this court, nor the public, nor counsel, nor providers have the right to ignore the rule of law as determined by the Supreme Court,' wrote Osteen, who was appointed to the court by Republican President George W. Bush.

It’s Not Just the Supreme Court—It’s the Fossil Fuel Industry, TooIt’s Not Just the Supreme Court—It’s the Fossil Fuel Industry, TooThe communities that disproportionately lack abortion and reproductive healthcare services are also the ones uniquely affected by environmental injustices. Decades of public health impacts have shown us that communities who struggled to access reproductive healthcare, even before Roe v. Wade's repeal, are the same ones who have faced decades of environmental racism and injustice. I am one face of the millions of people on the frontlines of urban oil extraction who endured serious health affects as a result.
