A registered nurse administers a dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital on Thursday, July 22, 2021, in Sugar Land.A political consultant firm with Democratic ties hired for a COVID outreach contract in Fort Bend County is under scrutiny, after an audit found they submitted questionable expenses and did not comply with terms of the $345,000 deal.
Johnson co-founded the firm in 2019, but is no longer working there as of August, according to her LinkedIn page. Dennis began there the same time, according to her LinkedIn page. Before that, she was a community outreach director with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for about two years. Johnson now lists Black Women's PAC - Texas as her employer on LinkedIn.
DeMerchant’s office declined to comment on the audit. George and Grady could not be reached for comment Friday morning. George was speaking at a county event. While Next Wave Strategies was hired to spread awareness on the COVID vaccine, only about 75% of the work they billed could be substantiated, the audit says.
When questioned about the identical timesheets, the audit says, Dennis said in the audit,"Shekira and I worked in lockstep appropriately to manage the project. Due to that fact, our activities mirrored each other." However, according to Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Director Dr. Jacquelyn Minter, the list Next Wave Strategies produced had already been working alongside the county.
