The eight youth-related calls over the weekend included fights and alcohol-fuelled disturbances and largely involved teens age 14 to 18

West Shore RCMP were kept busy last weekend by a string of eight youth-related calls that included fights and alcohol-fuelled disturbances.

Next, police responded to a complaint that up to 100 youths had congregated in the area of Thetis Lake and were consuming alcohol. They scattered when officers arrived. A trio of incidents Saturday began with police responding to a report of 10 to 14 teenagers yelling and smoking marijuana on Merchant Way in Langford, near Kelly Road. The youths had already headed in the direction of the Westshore Town Centre when police arrived.

Officers were then called to a business in the 3100-block of Jacklin Road near Belmont Market, where police said a highly intoxicated male youth had assaulted another youth without provocation. On Sunday, police were called to deal with a group of intoxicated youths throwing garbage around at a restaurant near Langford Parkway and Veterans Memorial Parkway. The youths were gone by the time police could respond.

West Shore RCMP noted that there has been an “influx” of calls about youth-related incidents in recent years. “Policing is only one part of the response — parental and community engagement is key when it comes to addressing the underlying issues facing our youth,” Preston said in a statement.
