Police rejecting anonymity for criminal suspects hailed as ‘huge victory’ for press freedom

While existing rules state that forces across England and Wales “should” publicly name those charged with crimes unless there are exceptional circumstances or judge-approved reporting restrictions, the updated guidance would have advised that individuals “can be named” at the discretion of the force.

Dawn Alford, executive director of the Society of Editors, said: “The decision by the College of Policing to reject a proposal to grant forces the option or whether or not to name an individual upon charge is a huge victory for press freedom. On Thursday, the College of Policing suggested the controversial amendments to the guidance had been proposed by the Information Commissioner’s Office to take account of evolving data protection law.
