West Jordan police are continuing to investigate the death of a 13-year-old boy who was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Monday. A 50-year-old man has been arrested.
At about 6 p.m., the boy was in a crosswalk, riding his bike south across 9000 South at 1510 West, according to police. A pickup truck turned onto westbound 9000 South from southbound 1510 West and struck the boy. According to witness, the driver of the pickup U-turned, drove past the injured boy and headed south on 1510 West.
“We have no words for why someone would leave another human in he road mortally injured,” said West Jordan police officer Samuel Winkler. Witnesses and police officers performed CPR on the victim, who was not breathing. The boy was taken by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center, where he died. Acting on information from witnesses, police identified the truck believed to have struck and killed the boy and arrested the driver Saratoga Springs. The suspect has been booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of automobile homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He is being held without bail pending formal charges.
The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name suspects until they have been formally charged with a crime.
