Even just nine episodes in, Pokémon's new protagonist Liko has had some major character growth, marking a stark contrast with the old anime.
Pokémon Horizons is once again setting itself apart from everything that came before it by taking a moment to evaluate Liko's growth as a character. All of Liko's progress so far comes down to just one question: Should she stay with the airship crew and keep adventuring, or go home and live a safe and quiet life?
From the very beginning, this adventure hasn't been Liko's choice. First, she was chased by the Explorers and only then rescued by Friede and the Rising Volt Tacklers. They were hired to bring her home to Paldea, so she had little choice but to go with them. Even the events on the island left her with no choice but to fight back. So, upon arriving in Paldea, Liko finds that she doesn't want to part ways with the Rising Volt Tacklers.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Liko's Growth In Pokémon Horizons Is Far Greater Than Ash's Was While it takes her some time to work up the courage, Liko eventually does tell her father and Professor Friede that she'd like to stay with them aboard the airship and keep traveling. It's a big moment for her character to be able to plainly state what she wants, rather than quietly accept what's happening around her.
That kind of growth marks a big contrast from Ash. Anime has changed a lot since the 1990s, but that doesn't change the fact that by the ninth episode of the original series, Ash hadn't even caught Bulbasaur yet. While Ash and Pikachu did grow over the course of the first episode, he didn't get much development from there until Charmander showed up, or Butterfree was released.
Pokémon Horizons has definitely proven by this point that it will be both more plot-driven and more character-driven than the anime under Ash ever was, and Liko's decision offers her a degree of agency that she hasn't had until now. Now Liko, like Ash, has chosen the call to adventure. From here on, whatever happens in Pokémon Horizons will be the result of Liko's decision to go out into the world, and that's a major step forward for her character.
