A home displays a sign against a development looking to turn an empty lot into a 20 story high rise in the neighborhood of Boulevard Oaks / Southampton near Rice University on Saturday, March 4, 2023 in Houston. It’s been 16 years since developers first pitched a high-rise apartment tower in a leafy, tree-lined Houston neighborhood of Boulevard Oaks, sparking one of the most contentious land-use battles in the city’s history.
The original developers, Buckhead Investments, spent years in lawsuits to build the project, ultimately getting approval from a judge to move forward with the project in 2016. But the property has sat untouched for several years until a new set of developers with Street Light Residential in 2022 pitched a revised version of the proposal.
In this episode of Looped In, co-hosts Rebecca Schuetz and Marissa Luck dive a bit into the history of The Ashby and provide an update on the new project, The Langley, along with neighbors efforts to control how the project is built.
