Justice Mary Moreau, a francophone judge from Alberta, would become the court’s first francophone from Western Canada if appointed, and would put women in the majority on the country’s most powerful court for the first time

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will nominate Mary Moreau, a francophone judge from Alberta, to fill the vacancy left on the Supreme Court of Canada by the resignation in June of Russell Brown.

Justice Moreau, currently the Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, would become the court’s first francophone from Western Canada if appointed, as is almost certain to happen within a couple of weeks. Under Canada’s system, the appointment is the prerogative of the prime minister and cabinet.

While she would not confirm her age for The Globe when her office was contacted in the summer, she is believed to be 67. Mandatory retirement age is 75.
