Because the game isn’t over, and the opponent, the SFU Football Alumni Society, might just be a great second\u002Dhalf team.

You might think SFU leadership would have done exactly that, exhausting every possible avenue to find a safe haven for a program that has existed since 1965. You would be wrong. Sure, there were conversations with Canada West and U SPORTS officials, but no application was started. SFU leadership decided it was unlikely that the “very complex” application process would bear any fruit, since current policy requires a school to compete in all sports offered by U SPORTS.

Imagine, if you will, the SFU head coach who decides his team is so unlikely to win on Saturday that he doesn’t even begin to prepare a game plan the previous week. Or imagine the fleet of receivers who decide, in pre-season, that the offensive scheme is too complex for them, and they quit. Or the student-athlete who walks out of a lecture in the fall because she can’t envision graduating in the spring.

“We are taking some legal action, in which we are working on a partial injunction to challenge the process that has taken place with regards to the university not consulting or communicating properly with key stakeholders such as ourselves,” alumni society president Mark Bailey said last week. Last Thursday, Postmedia asked SFU leadership to address specific concerns raised by Bailey and the school replied with a statement. The statement also said that once the Lone Star decision had been made, “discussions were held with some members of the coaching staff and key alumni regarding potential options moving forward.”“The university also met with sport leaders across the collegiate landscape including in the NCAA, and NAIA,” the statement continued.
