a column in which Charlotte Zoller addresses your questions about living life in a bigger body. In our first installment, she answers Teen Vogue editors’ questions. Have a question for Charlotte? Send it to submit@askafatgirl.com or DM herLet’s kick things off by addressing the fashionably dressed elephant in the room: me! Who am I and why am I qualified to give you advice? My name is Charlotte.

Right now is an especially tough time for many, as the coronavirus pandemic keeps us all inside, practicing social distancing. This means we might be dealing with new and specific body-related feelings, or the same ones we’ve been struggling with or wondering about for a long time.My family is really tough on me about my weight.

The most important thing to remember is that your body is yours. You may share blood, experiences, and a home with these people, but they don’t own you or your body. That said, it can be difficult or scary to push back on figures of authority, especially when you’re dependent on them or living under the same roof, particularly during times of isolation.

“If you love me, you’ll want the best for me, so let me tell you what I need. [Fill in your specific needs here, i.e., no talk about dieting.]”Ultimately, what your family member is saying to you reflects on them, not you. It comes down to respect, which you and everyone in this world deserve. In the words of our lord and saviorI want to get back into working out and moving my body. Prior to isolation, I was nervous about going to the gym because I didn’t want to be judged for my size.
