StarExclusive: Female soccer players hiding in Afghanistan sue Canada to honour its promise. In an interview with the Star, one of those soccer players described how Canada dashed her hopes of escaping Kabul.
OTTAWA—Two female Afghan national soccer team players still in hiding in Afghanistan are part of a group of six Afghan nationals suing the Canadian government to force it to honour what they say was a promise of refuge in Canada, according to new revelations in court documents.
The Star is not naming the woman it spoke to because of the risk to her personal safety. The court file remains heavily redacted, blacking out any reference to identifying features such as age of the six applicants. One of the applicants’ for refuge in Canada attested that, “By letter dated 2021, a Taliban operative asked another Taliban operative to kill me, provided information about car and travel patterns, and offered a bounty of USD $20,000.
The letters were titled “Facilitation Letter Visa” and stated that the person who is named on the document “had been granted” a Canadian visa. The document displayed the government of Canada logo and a Global Affairs stamp. “I think the record is very clear that FIFA understood that these were visas for Canada,” said lawyer Maureen Silcoff.
