If Biden loses re-election in 2024, Harris' position as Democrats' heir-apparent grows shakier. If she herself is the nominee in 2024 and loses, she probably wouldn't even be a candidate in 2028. Of Harris, Newsom told the Chronicle,"I'm hopeful that she's the next president of the United States.
The most complicated timeline is one in which Biden runs for re-election in 2024 and wins, setting up Harris to take his place in 2028. But going down the rabbit hole of entertaining such hypotheticals misses the larger point: Newsom clearly wants to be president one day and his denials should be disregarded — even if one day those denials expand to encompass years in which he'd actually run.
