In a stunning acknowledgment, the Pleasant Hill pilot charged with trying to shut off a plane's engines told authorities that he had tried psychedelic mushrooms for the first time, was suffering a nervous breakdown and was not OK.
"Yah…I pulled both emergency shut off handles because I thought I was dreaming and I just wanna wake up," Joe Emerson said, according to theagainst him in U.S. District Court in Oregon. "I'm admitting to what I did. I'm not fighting any charges you want to bring against me, guys."
The power on the plane never went off and the aircraft with about 80 passengers landed safely after being diverted to Portland. arraigned in state court in Multnomah County, Oregon, Emerson, who eventually sat in the jump seat of the plane, engaged the pilots in casual conversation about planes. The second pilot saw Emerson reaching up and grabbing the red fire handles and pulling them down. There was a brief struggle and Emerson left the cockpit about 90 seconds after he messed around with the gear.
Another flight attendant heard Emerson saying, "I messed everything up," admitting that he "tried to kill everybody." When the plane finally landed, police began interviewing Emerson.
