Every hospital in the city has moved alternate level of care patients into transitional care units since the COVID\u002D19 pandemic began.

In the seven months since Bill 7 was implemented, more than 7,600 ALC patients have transitioned from hospitals into long-term care, an increase of 18 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier, a Ministry of Long Term Care spokesperson said. There has also been an 18-per-cent decrease in the long-term care waitlist for alternate level of care patients.

Moving ALC patients to transitional care units inside retirement and nursing homes allows them to get the kind of care better suited for their needs, hospitals say. The elderly make up a portion of ALC patients. Many so-called ALC patients are waiting for spaces in long-term care or for home care, while others might be waiting for rehabilitation.

The Ottawa Hospital now has patients in both West End Villa, a long-term care home operated by Extendicare in the west end, and at Aspira Bearbrook, a retirement home operated by Sienna Senior Living in the east end. The hospital has 105 transitional beds at West End Villa and 21 beds at Aspira Bearbrook. Most of the current 333 ALC patients remain in hospital.Article content
