Visitors to the Pittsburgh International Airport will no longer need to buy a plane ticket in order to pay homage to NFL Hall of Famer Franco Harris.
A statue honoring the late Pittsburgh Steelers running back, along with statues of George Washington and famed journalist Nellie Bly, has been moved from the Airside Terminal, behind a security checkpoint, to the airport’s Landside Terminal.
“Franco Harris was a man of the people, and we wanted to give fans access to him regardless of whether they’re traveling or not,” Keny Marshall, Arts & Culture Manager at the airport, . “He represents so many of the best parts of Pittsburgh, and now his statue is doing that in a much more prominent position.”“We appreciate how important he’s become to so many of our passengers, and we really feel this is the best way to share him with the region,” Marshall said. “And, of course, we couldn’t leave his friends Nellie and George behind.”
A tweet from the airport’s Twitter account said that the statues will remain there until 2025, when they’ll move to a new terminal.was a Penn State alumnus and is best known for his “Immaculate Reception” catch during the Steelers’ first playoff victory over the Raiders in 1972. The NFL considers it the greatest play in the league’s history.
