The Astros rallied in the ninth inning to knot the score, but Ryan Pressly couldn't...

Pittsburgh Pirates' Ji Hwan Bae celebrates at home plate after hitting a game-winning, three-run home run against the Houston Astros during the ninth inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh, Tuesday, April 11, 2023. PITTSBURGH — Two All-Star closers combusted Tuesday night. Houston’s happened last and sent it further below .500.

Down two runs and without much noticeable life, the Astros mounted a rally against David Bednar, the Pirates’ All-Star closer who had not allowed a run all season. Shortstop Rodolfo Castro’s throwing error on Mauricio Dubón’s routine ground ball opened the door with one out. He could not. Pressly retired one of the four hitters he saw. Castro blooped a single before pinch-hitter Andrew McCutchen rolled another through the six-hole, turning Pittsburgh’s lineup over to Bae, a man who entered Tuesday with 62 major league at-bats and one home run. Pressly hung a full-count changeup, giving him a second.Home runs can be a consequence of Cristian Javier’s style.

Javier scattered five hits and struck out just three across his six-inning start. The Pirates took 33 swings against his fastball and whiffed just eight times. Javier will rue the two home runs, but one errant slider may irk him more.
