The goal of the meeting was to get public feedback on the tourism marketing levy bylaw that passed its first reading on Sept. 18 and will be going to a second reading at the next council meeting on Oct. 16., Liz Lapier, events manager for DEANS, and Wes Surrett, the former chair of DEANS, were also in attendance during the public hearing to present on the levy and answer questions.
“We want to make sure that we're looking at fall and winter and not just spring and summer when we’re busy,” MacKinnon said on Tuesday evening.Pictou’s deputy mayor, Melinda MacKenzie, was the first to bring up concerns about the town's lack of consultations with accommodation operators. Surrett didn’t provide a clear explanation of the consultation process he experienced but did express that consultation in this instance probably could’ve been better.
