When Pictou resident John Campbell sees tears in the eyes of people who read his poem about Ukraine, he knows he has accomplished his goal. | SaltWire
John Campbell created this wooden sculpture inspired by a Ukrainian sculpture known as "Bitter Memory of Childhood."When Pictou resident John Campbell sees tears in the eyes of people who read his poem about Ukraine, he knows he has accomplished his goal.
Campbell, who has Multiple Sclerosis and battles the complications that come from it, wrote the lines in recognition of the war that Russia is waging against Ukraine. While he wasn’t sure whether to make it public at first, for fear that some might not get his meaning or even laugh, he’s thankful since he started making it public it has been well received, with many being moved to tears.
This isn’t Campbell’s first work inspired by Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Before he wrote the poem, he made a carving modeled after a statue called “Bitter Memory of Childhood” which remembers the starvation of millions of Ukrainians in 1932–33 as a result of Joseph Stalin-led Soviet policies. In Ukraine, the starvation is known as the Holodomor. The bronze statue, “Bitter Memory of Childhood” was created by Petro Drozdowsky. He carved his version of the sculpture just before the start of the war.
“My hope is to remind people of what is still going on and make them think a little more about what's happening. Evil does exist and his name is Putin.” Although he has no personal connections to Ukraine, Campbell said he is touched by what he sees happening.Shot at and struck, though it caused little painAs little bronze girl stood with her mighty UkraineShe would stand for her people at the end of their ropeHope turns to despair, it really can’t beIts lies, can’t be real, she sways and shuffles her feet.
