Pickering council is not supporting the fast-tracking of an expansion at the Orchard Villa long-term care residence. The private operator, Southbridge Care H

, they were first notified on March 7 by Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing that Southbridge was looking to fast-track the project. The project needed to be ready for construction by August 31, with the first residents moving in by June 2025.

“The timeframe provided by [the] ministry to staff to formulate comments […] on a proposed development of this scope is unrealistic and unreasonable,” reads a staff report.“A 15-storey building with more beds will mean nothing without the quality of care that is so desperately-needed for some of our most-vulnerable members of society and for our family members,” said Cathy Parkes, whose father died in the facility.

“There’s no evidence or indication that the province or anyone, besides the City of Pickering, has reached out to or consulted with the families, some of whom are here this evening,” said Ward 3 Regional Councillor David Pickles. “There’s no evidence that anyone reached out to the neighbouring community or consulted with the Pickering community. […] This is not the process that would normally apply to a planning application.

“The government of Ontario has a long way to go to regain our trust and your trust when it comes to an aging population,” he added.“In Pickering, there are 657 people desperately waiting for long-term care,” said Jake Roseman, a spokesperson for Long-Term Care Minister Paul Calandra. “This latest council resolution was a vote against demolishing Orchard Villa and building a new state-of-the-art home.
