In 1988, 87-year-old Alphege Gore was Canada's oldest prisoner, having stabbed his wife to death the year before.

In one of his first assignments at the Gazette, Dave Sidaway travelled to Joyceville medium-security prison near Kingston, Ont., along with reporter Mark Abley in the summer of 1988 to shoot Alphege Gore, Canada’s oldest prisoner.

“Behind a pair of 4.5-metre-high barbed-wire fences, inside a penitentiary shielded by guard towers and electronic alarm systems, Alphege Gore is laughing,” the article begins. “They have a big pile of eggs here at breakfast,” he says, his 87-year-old eyes dancing with merriment behind thick glasses. “Some of the boys eat six eggs. But a cup of tea and four fried eggs on a slice of bread and butter — that’s my limit.

Gore was sentenced to three years in prison for stabbing to death the woman he had been married to for 61 years. Margaret Gore was 78. He stabbed her 62 times.Article content During their visit, Gore showed almost no contrition. “She’s been bossing me all my life,” he said. “I got tired taking orders.”Canada’s oldest prisoner, Alphonse Gore, in his Joyceville Prison cell during an inteview with reporter Mark Abley on July 27, 1988. Gore was 87 years old and killed his wife the year before. He likes this shot in part because it serves to encapsulate Gore’s entire existence — the small bed, the bars, the toilet sitting out in plain sight.

Editors chose to run a similar shot that was in colour, but didn’t show the toilet. He remembers his photo editor was livid. At the end of the article, Abley asks Gore if he has any photos of his wife among his collection of snapshots.“Alphege Gore peers through his glasses at the sink, the bare toilet, and the bars on his door. His smile takes a few seconds to return.”
