Photographer Gillian Laub sees her family portraits as a ‘microcosm of America’.
, Laub captures the cultural tensions between herself and her family members, many of whom ardently supported the campaign and presidency of Donald Trump.recently spoke to Laub about the project’s origins, her experience of telling her family story on such a large scale, and what she hopes families with conflicting political beliefs will take away from the work. Has doing all this work with your family changed anything about the way you approach other photo projects? It’s kind of the opposite. Especially during the Trump years, I had a lot of anger toward my family, and there was a moment when I had to really talk to myself and try to approach my family the way I approach other subjects, which is nonjudgmentally and with an open mind. So it’s more the converse of what you asked me, because I had to employ the same kind of approach that I use for all subjects and stories, and really apply the same rigor with my own family.
