We chat with TheAfterparty producers philiplord , chrizmillr and theanthonyking about new genres and the similarities between the series & AcrossTheSpiderVerse
In The Afterparty season 2, a new murder brings Detective Danner back into the lives of Zoë and Aniq with a whole new batch of suspects. While Aniq and Zoë are clear of suspicion in this murder, it still hits close to home with her family in the hot seat after her sister's new husband is found dead.
Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Anthony Star caught up with Screen Rant to talk about the new season of The Afterparty. Miller explained how they make the murder mystery feel personal and the connection between the characters and the genre of their episode. The three of them also teased their favorite genres from the new season of The Afterparty, including film noir, Oscar bait, and soap opera.
When you're putting the story together, you're developing these characters, what their secrets are, and what the relationships are you're also thinking about, "Well, how would they tell their story? What genre would their mind movie be?" And trying to fit a genre to the character that you've developed, but then once you've picked that genre you can augment their character more in that direction.
Chris Miller: I think subjectivity is the key to engagement in film and television. I think if you're feeling something's just sort of objective and you're not invested, like seeing something through someone else's eyes really makes you care and empathize with that person. That's the philosophy of The Afterparty and everything that we do.
Anthony King: I think that it's such a Jenga tower of not only is it a murder mystery, not only is it a comedy, not only is it Rashomon style, where you're seeing the same scene from different points of view over and over again, but also there's the genre element, and you're juggling all of those things constantly.
