Sanjeev Bhaskar's DI Sunny Khan is grieving the loss of his former partner heavily in the opening episode of series five. Viewers might not feel quite the same
This might have been unfortunate because what elevatedwas the chemistry between DCI Cassie Stuart and her colleague DI Sunny Khan – a mature, comradely working relationship between a man and a woman without a hint of sexual tension or even mild flirting. And in TV dramas, that’s as rare as a supermarket tomato.
Writer Chris Lang is too intelligent to simply introduce a Cassie 2.0 as a replacement. Instead, he has gone for the polar opposite in Sinéad Keenan’s DCI Jess James – a brusque, business-like new boss with seemingly little time for cold cases or Sunny’s grief-stricken demeanour. And Sunny wasn’t living up to his name in the opening episode; in fact “Touchy” or “Moody” might have been more accurate. He and his colleague Fran shot each other empathetic, meaningful looks each time their new boss said something insensitive, but mostly he spent the time moping angrily around the office as if Jess herself had killed Cassie. And then he spent his evening communing with Cassie’s gravestone instead of attending the candlelit dinner prepared by his partner.
I think we were supposed to side with Sunny, and perhaps this reflects badly on me, but I found his hostility rather unprofessional. He should definitely have taken some compassionate leave. As for Jess, she had every reason to feel terse and distracted – her husband having ended their marriage 54 minutes before she started her new job.
