Perspective: No one tell my mother about this column

This is not a photo of my mother. Deal with it. By Daniel W. Drezner Daniel W. Drezner Bio Follow Daniel W. Drezner is a professor of international politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a regular contributor to PostEverything.

After the publication of the story, Tanden tweeted out a statement from her mother, who said that “for the first time in my life, a reporter contacted me out of nowhere and said she wanted to talk to me for what I thought was a nice story about Neera. I didn’t understand that my words would be used in the story.”

The hard-working staff here at Spoiler Alerts has more selfish concerns. Tanden runs a think tank and is way more influential in D.C. policy circles than I am. On the other hand, I have just completed my Season of Doom essay series, which has been making some waves. And this NPR story about scientists reanimating pig brains means there’s going to be some demand for my zombie expertise. There’s just the slightest chance some outlet will want to do a small profile.

That said, my mother has a few blind spots. She does not possess a powerful internal editor. She does not fully understand the nature of modern media. In other words, despite all of my entreaties, she still reads the comments. If any of you call her to talk about me, she’s going to blab. Worse, she’s going to blab all the embarrassing stories about me as a kid. I mean, the truly embarrassing, discomfiting stories that she thinks are adorable but will prompt immortal memes.
