Officers attempted to stop the vehicle in connection with an investigation of an attempted car theft from a Marlboro home.
One person died and three others were injured early Wednesday morning after a car being pursued by police hit several vehicles on a Middlesex County highway, authorities said.
A Marlboro police officer was trying to stop the car while investigating an attempted car theft from a home in town, according to a statement from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. During the pursuit at around 2:14 a.m. on Route 9 south in Old Bridge, the car hit an unspecified number of vehicles, resulting in the death of one of their occupants and injuries to three others, the office said.did not say how severe the injuries were.
It was unclear if the person driving the car that was pursued by police was arrested. A spokesperson for the office did not respond to an email seeking clarification. The incident remained under investigation by the office, which handles circumstances where a person dies during an encounter with police or while a person is in custody.
