Pentagon and Lockheed Martin have agreed to big cost reduction on F-35 fighters
Share to twitterThere was a time not so long ago when some experts thought the tri-service F-35 fighter was just too hard to do. The performance requirements were too demanding, it was said, or the costs would be too high.
That in itself does not make F-35 a bargain. What’s striking about the reduced price-tag is that it buys a plane that is nearly invisible to enemy radar and is several times more effective than the F-16 at air-to-air combat, air-to-ground strike missions, collection of intelligence and suppression of enemy radars.
That required three different variants, but they were supposed to be relying on common design features and on-board equipment. They all had to deliver comprehensive situational awareness for pilots, extreme accuracy in striking a range of targets, high probability of survival while transiting hostile air space, and networking features that would facilitate the sharing of reconnaissance.
